Hisohiso

In this day and age with prompt to code being twenty a month, writing about your side project is like the old meme “let me sing you the song of my people”. So, yea, let me tell you about my side project …

My side project is called Hisohiso and it’s hosted at https://www.hisohiso.org.

Hisohiso is a room for private encrypted conversations and agent control. Two in one. So it either rocks at both, or it does none well.

Why private and encrypted conversations?

On May 8th 2026 Meta decided any chat via Instagram is plain text. Why Instagram only and not also Whatsapp? Because that’s where the money is. TikTok, weeks before, ruled out ever having encryption on its direct messaging feature. Zoom is E2E only for paying business accounts. Turkey managed to “convince” Apple to remove encrypted iCloud backups for Turkey alone!

These are hard times for private people. Yet, it’s not all about secrets, or the desire to feel that there are personal areas, of which you and you alone possess knowledge about.

It’s also about something else. Traces. Track records. Being a protagonist, all the damn time. One of the greatest things about talking and conversations is that they are fleeting experiences. You have them in the moment, and then they’re gone. With the exception of a super small number of people, most of us can’t recite a conversation. You’re only left with the effects of that conversation, with the connection and experience.

Not online tho. Online everything is forever.

Hisohiso is a super naive and simple attempt to tackle these issues. I don’t know if it solves them and I am sure it creates new ones. But for now you visit a website and can immediately create a “room”, in which you, by yourself, start inviting people. In that room every message is encrypted end to end with a key every participant has. 

It’s all in browser. No apps. You can add it to homescreen for more convenience. No accounts. No scanning for contacts. No messages from strangers. By default someone in the room has to approve someone else joining. Rooms can also have passwords required, to even have those inside know that you’re waiting. And you can also set a spoecific knock message, which those inside can extra use to decide if you should be in. Something you have – the URL, something you know – the password, something you are – ther knock message. 

You can make any room more secure or less secure. A lot is optional. You can even enable “auto join” so you don’t have to approve people joining. But one thing that you can’t disable is that any single participant in a room can disband it. When one disbands, everything is gone for all, the room, the keys and the messages from everyone’s history. Sure, that doesn’t prevent screenshots. But remember, no accounts, no phone number, no device fingerprinting.

OK cool but when?

When conversation itself is the fun to be had. Banter, gossip, shit posting with people you trust and who trust you. When you actually have a secret to keep. When it’s awkward to share identity – think of vibing in a long line for hydration at a festival with a random person, who waits at the same line. When you want temporary spaces that don’t need to be managed.

Now the other part. 

Like any song of anybody’s people, you’ve learned about history and motivation and then at some point you’re getting to seemingly unrelated stuff that they just do because it just happened that they think they’re good at whatever.

Same privacy. Same encryption. I’ve built a CLI that can run as a daemon on a machine, or as a froreground app, and this CLI creates a room which you can join (pair) from some other device (a phone, or a tablet or any other computer). Now you’re in a control room where you control the hisohiso cli from another device.

Hisohiso cli can spawn agents, put them in their own rooms and set you up to join those agent rooms. Hisohiso cli can also schedule spawning certain agents and executing a prompt, then showing the result in the control room.

But the best part of Hisohiso agent control is the UX. I’ve always disliked the way Telegram or Whatsapp feel when discussing with eager coding agents or autonomous ones too. On a computer is manageable, big screen, full attention. But on a mobile device it’s an endless scroll jitter, and impossible amounts of texts. So Hisohiso solves that with blocks.

Hisohiso blocks are UI elelements optimised for information hierarchy and touchscreen interaction. If the agent wants you to choose between three options you’ll get three buttons, not the option to reply with which one. A link can be tapped to be open. You get sliders, swipe left or right for yes or no, carrousels with cards, diffs, confirmation buttons with long press for destructive actions and other great affordances.

All of these are streamed UI created on the fly by the agent for the current turn. This makes for a fantastic and smooth experience working remotely with agents on some machine, your home laptop or a VPS, all the same.

Hisohiso CLI is relying on the same system of encryption and privacy for agents as for humans. But if you use claude or codex or similar harnesses your conversation still goes to the inference provider. Hisohiso will shine for those running local AI, or who have other special privacy preserving inference arrangements.

Architecturally Hisohiso is a very simple system. It has a PWA with the chat app, a relay server built with FrankenPHP, Mercure and SQLite and a Bun bundle for CLI. The relay server can be easily self hosted and it will also serve the PWA so the entire setup is perfectly self runnable to achieve even greater privacy and control. Deploying Hisohiso on a Digital Ocean droplet is as easy as using the same script the repository uses for GH Actions. 

I haven’t got the slightest clue how to monetise this. Like any song of my people it’s fun, has some substance and its here to stay. What becomes of it remains to be seen in time! Thanks for reading and looking forward to interact with anyone intersted 🙂
